How to memorize vocabulary fast

Word lists feel productive and fade in a week. Vocabulary sticks when each word has a context, gets pulled from memory in both directions, and comes back just before you forget it.

LEARN WORDS IN A SENTENCE, NOT A LIST

"Rechazar = to reject" is easy to forget. "Rechazó la oferta" (she rejected the offer) gives the word grammar, a situation and a sound. Put the sentence on the card and blank out the target word.

TEST BOTH DIRECTIONS

Recognising a word when you read it is easier than producing it when you speak. Make one card from the foreign word to your language and one the other way round. The second direction is the one conversations need.

SPACE THE REVIEWS

Review new words the same day, the next day, after three days, and after a week. Words you miss go back to the start. See spaced repetition.

GROUP WORDS BY SITUATION

Learn "at the doctor" or "in a meeting" sets of 10 to 15 words. Related words cue each other, and you can use them together straight away.

ADD A PICTURE OR A SILLY LINK

For stubborn words, attach an image or a sound-alike story. "Gato" (cat): a cat sitting on a gate. Absurd links are easier to recall than sensible ones.

SAY IT OUT LOUD

Speaking the word engages hearing and movement as well as sight. Record yourself on the card and compare with a native speaker.

A 15-MINUTE DAILY ROUTINE

  • 5 min: review due cards, both directions, out loud.
  • 5 min: add 10 new words from something you read or watched, in sentences.
  • 5 min: write three sentences using today's words.

Ten words a day is 300 a month, enough to move up a level. Build decks quickly with language flashcards or paste a text into the AI flashcard generator.
